DIY

swissmiss 21 May 2012, 9:36 pm CEST

DIY just added the explore stream which makes me want to go home and make something with my kids asap. Kids crafts/art is the best.

Courtesy Table

The Courtesy Table by the Dutch designer Marleen Jansen is low on the practicality scale but wins lots of points for its entertainment and sculptural factor.

Wood Casting by Hilla Shamia

Design Milk 21 May 2012, 8:00 pm CEST

Wood Casting by Hilla Shamia

Israeli designer Hilla Shamia uniquely joins the materials of aluminum and wood in this Wood Casting series. Using a whole tree trunk, Shamia pours molten aluminum directly onto the wood, which burns the surface and darkens the wood. The wood gets cut up lengthwise and put into a mold to form the frame and legs of the piece.

Wood Casting by Hilla Shamia

Each piece is completely one-of-a-kind due to the various trees used and depending on the “leakage” of the metal throughout the wood cracks. I love the mix of natural wood and the sleek modern metal.

Prove di Stampa Exhibition by Diego Grandi

Design Milk 21 May 2012, 7:00 pm CEST

Prove di Stampa Exhibition by Diego Grandi

Italian designer Diego Grandi does a little bit of everything – surface design, interiors, and even exhibition design. Prove di Stampa is an exhibition he designed for the 15th year celebration of SaloneSatellite 2012 and it’s all about a print laboratory.

Prove di Stampa Exhibition by Diego Grandi

More about the exhibition:

A print laboratory will be held in a 25 m2 area, a setting made of magnifying lenses, colour gradients and typographic memories. The space is a summary on digital printing experienced through mutant surfaces: colour shades, defined by different white grids, create an installation based on the CMYK system. Laminate, ceramic and wallpaper express their possibility of customization and the opportunities of surface design nowadays.

earthnform Porcelain

Design Milk 21 May 2012, 6:00 pm CEST

earthnform Porcelain

Los Angeles-based earthnform designs a line of porcelain that is both sculptural and architectural. What’s unique about them is that they design the pieces from package material. If you think about how much plastic is produced and where it goes after you’ve opened whatever it is that you bought, it’s quite overwhelming. Well, earthnform wants to bring the issue to the surface while at the same time “producing functional pieces cast from found plastic.” By reusing the packaging material, they in turn, create art.

“Gehry” ceramic bowl In honor of architect Frank Gehry. This design came from a plug in air freshener package found in a convenience store in Burbank, California.

“Peggy” ceramic bowl In honor of Peggy Guggenheim. Molded from plastic that was originally used to protect a fire alarm.

Glorifying the suberb portfolio of German graphic designer Alexander Lis

It's Nice That 21 May 2012, 5:35 pm CEST

List

Now, if you were paying very close attention, you would have seen that Alexander Lis was recently featured on the site for his After School Club collaborative project with Hort but, the German-based designer definitely deserves a post all of his own. A skilful visual communicator, his solid portfolio of graphic design entices with its blend of playful media, bright colours and a strong aesthetic style. It’s bold, experimental and feels contemporary without trying to be too trendy.

Joe Kievitt

Design Milk 21 May 2012, 5:00 pm CEST

Joe Kievitt Suspension, 20 x 15 inches, ink on paper, 2010

Portland, Maine-based artist Joe Kievitt’s abstract works are what he describes as “drawings with ink and acrylic on paper.” I call it colorful patterning at its best. He uses tape that he cuts at various widths with a custom-made tool to isolate areas for ink and paint washes to be applied. The patterns in each piece are perfectly imperfect (which happens to be my favorite kind). The asymmetrical works are done by hand and become an anxiety-ridden process due to working with unforgiving mediums such as ink and liquid paint. The outcome, however, is well worth it.

Fubiz™ 21 May 2012, 4:42 pm CEST

Stunningly eerie wooden portraits of children from artist Tilo Uischner

I’ve found the taste of avocado a difficult one to master. The weird fatty fruit with buttery, soap-like texture forms a strange the consistency in my mouth that I’m not sure I’m okay with, yet I find myself always returning for more. It’s an intriguing, exotic and odd thing that I want to be a part of, so I think deep down I have a love for the avocado – it just isn’t a conventional one.

Fluidity Dish Rack Planter by DesignLibero

Design Milk 21 May 2012, 4:00 pm CEST

Fluidity Dish Rack Planter by DesignLibero

DesignLibero is a design studio based in Milan whose Fluidity dish rack is such a cool idea. There’s a small planter attached to the rack that uses the water that runs off your dishes as they dry, growing plants or herbs. The fluid base design directs the water runoff into the plant containers, which are with clay pellets and coconut fiber.

Six artists customise six cycles as part of Tokyo Bike's east London launch

It's Nice That 21 May 2012, 3:30 pm CEST

Adimg_0227list

Some equations are simple. Very cool bikes + very cool artists = very very cool collaboration. To mark the opening of their new east London store, Tokyo Bike commissioned six creatives to customise one of their bikes and safe to say the results are tres jolie. Great to see last one of last year’s Grads Mike Guppy’s contribution and really into Soju Tanaka’s illustrated effort and Simon Memel’s stripped-back typographic turn, but in truth they’re all worth a gander.

Brydge iPad Keyboard

Design Milk 21 May 2012, 3:00 pm CEST

Brydge iPad Keyboard

Look again. This isn’t a MacBook. It’s an iPad and the new Brydge. Brydge is a device for your iPad that turns your handy tablet into a laptop.

Brydge iPad Keyboard

The Brydge has a full-size, aluminum keyboard, with or without speakers, that features a heavy-duty clamp to hold your iPad in place. The device has a hinge that allows you to open and view your iPad at any angle and then close down when you’re done. After it’s closed up, both the iPad and Brydge will go to sleep. I love the fact that the Brydge resembles the aesthetics of an Apple product and that it makes the iPad that much easier to use while on the go or at home.

Currently still in the funding phase on Kickstarter, the campaign winds down on June 4th and is more than 4x fully funded. They are expected to ship the product mid-October with the price being around $170 for the original model and $210 for the speaker model.

Estelle Hanania's take on Nike Sportswear proves to be, well, magnificent

It's Nice That 21 May 2012, 2:45 pm CEST

Main

Going by her other projects, which range from fairly conservative fashion editorial to photo shoots so weird that I doubt you’d even be able to dream them up, Estelle Hanania is making a big impact on the photography and editorial world. In her recent shoot for Leslie David and Monsieur L’Agent’s beautiful Stadium Paris magazine for Nike, Estelle works her magic on some magnificent models and immediately makes the minimal NSW logo (literally just ‘NSW’ on a t shirt) seem like the coolest thing you’ve ever seen.

Regret

swissmiss 21 May 2012, 2:31 pm CEST

“If we have goals and dreams and we want to do our best, and if we love people and we don’t want to hurt them or lose them, we should feel pain when things go wrong. The point isn’t to live without any regrets, the point is to not hate ourselves for having them… We need to learn to love the flawed, imperfect things that we create, and to forgive ourselves for creating them. Regret doesn’t remind us that we did badly — it reminds us that we know we can do better.” - Kathryn Schulz
