Inside B&H conveyor system…

swissmiss 27 Jan 2012, 9:26 pm CET

If you are a photo buff then you most probably know about the mothership of all photo stores, B&H, here in NYC. The most fascinating part of B&H has always been their conveyor system. Let’s say you decided to buy a new lens, you’re on the third floor, they’ll put that lens into a basket that then is being transported down to the register at the exit, silently ‘floating’ through the store.

The Lense folks secretly put a camera into one of the baskets to see how it works from the inside. Again, this might be only fascinating if you have actually been to B&H.

Rememberings

Bravo Company, an independent design studio based in Singapore, has recently launched a clever new product called Rememberings™. These stretchable silicon rings, similar to those yellow LIVESTRONG bracelets, have inscriptions on them that remind us of little, yet important things, such as Take pills; Call mum; Pay bills; Return books; Buy gift, etc, that always seem to slip our minds. The bright colors are sure to catch anybody’s eye, which thus fulfills its purpose of reminding! It works well as an accessory or a gift for a forgetful friend.

Patane Residence by bureau^proberts

Patane Residence by bureau^proberts

bureau^proberts designed this three-story modern family home in Newmarket, Queensland, Australia. The Patane Residence is concrete construction with an open and airy floor plan that features cantilevered balconies offering views of the Brisbane skyline and Mount Coot-tha.

The indoor/outdoor feel is achieved with each floor having various types of floor to ceiling windows and doors that open up to the outdoor pool, terraces, patio and yard space. The smooth, finished white floors are a sleek continuation of the white walls inside and out. The white throughout balances well with the warm wood ceilings and trim work, as well as the fence, shutters and other outdoor features. It definitely has a tropical, almost Brazilian feel.

We Never Give Up! Modern Sled

Design Milk 27 Jan 2012, 6:00 pm CET

We Never Give Up! Modern Sled

I bet you’d never expect to see a modern sled! We Never Give Up! is a design by Polish designer Szymon Hanczar that’s an update to the traditional winter sled.

Here’s some info about the design written by Joanna Legan:

Not so long ago people in Poland used to take their sledges from the basements and take over all possible city hills. At that time snow still existed. As we are suffering from greenhouse effect and something like snow simply does not exist anymore, we are offering a brand- new, attractive and minimalist sledge, possible to use on all types of flat surfaces, sloping though. The sledge is more trendy than long board, and more stylish than roller-skates. Additionally, being a double vehicle, they offer you the possibility of integration. It’s an ideal option for vehicle owners. Ideally suited for parking lots, deserted streets and flats which were constructed by developers not knowing how to use spirit levels. The sledge develops an impressive speed. In any self- respecting apartment they can function as a prestigious mobile couch.

The Weekender

It's Nice That 27 Jan 2012, 5:30 pm CET

Weekendersmall

Listen up Weekendudes and Weekendettes, have I got a fact for you. So it turns out the South Kensington area of London where all the museums are is known as Albertropolis. How fricking sweet is that, and what a boost for all of us with names that end in “-bert” who up to now have had only the nagging fear someone might call us Bertie. My desk has been renamed Robertropolis and it has laws and a flag and a national anthem (I’ll sing it if you ask me nicely). Where was I? Oh yes, live from Robertropolis, it’s the Weekender!…. Famous Paintings Improved by Cats

It's Nice That 27 Jan 2012, 4:30 pm CET

Main

Improved is a strong word, but this is so, so good. As you look at the images on this site, all your prior knowledge about art history and the Renaissance slowly drains out of your ear (that’s what ear wax is) to be replaced by this smug, cackling fat cat, lounging in some of the most epic paintings in the history of time. Take that, intellect!

“The Girl with 7 horses” est le dernier projet de la photographe Ulrika Kestere. En utilisant des tissus divers pour recomposer des chevaux dans la nature, cette artiste retrace le voyage d’une femme à la recherche de ces animaux imaginaires. Une série à découvrir dans la suite.

Reggie Watts/Noah Kalina: Transport

It's Nice That 27 Jan 2012, 4:00 pm CET

Rrrrwwww

If someone held a gun to my head and asked me to pick the coolest person on earth ( a fairly unlikely scenario I grant you – what could they possibly be trying to achieve?!) I would probably plump for comedian/musician/maverick Reggie Watts. Constantly defying expectations, this collaboration with photographer Noah Kalina is a peach of a little film – enigmatic, elegant and every gorgeous shot is composed with consummate care. Beautiful.

Friday Five with Bob Vila

Design Milk 27 Jan 2012, 3:00 pm CET

Friday Five with Bob Vila

If you’re an HGTV or DIY Network fanatic, you must understand that the channel didn’t blossom out of nowhere. Long ago, Bob Vila and This Old House laid the groundwork for DIY as entertainment. Vila, who has spent his career helping people upgrade their homes (and lives), went on to present similar offshoot series, Bob Vila’s Home Again, Bob Vila, and Restore America with Bob Vila. His latest efforts include tackling the online world with his webisode pilot series Building Green. We’re lucky to say he’s the star of this week’s Friday Five.

Friday Five with Bob Vila

1. Florida Gardens I grew up with a small front and back yard in Miami that my father tended. I helped and eventually as a teenager, I did most of the work. I’ve always loved the tropical landscape.

Friday Five with Bob Vila

2. Cars I’ve been lucky with cars. My first was an MGA, and I’ve owned a classic E-type. The Mercedes in the picture was bought new in ’68 by my in-laws.

Friday Five with Bob Vila

3. Great Wine I learned a little about wines when I lived in Europe in the early ’70s. I learned even more from my late father-in-law, Joe King, who was generous with his excellent cellar.

Friday Five with Bob Vila

4. Italian Design Italian-made clothing lasts a long time, and the tailoring is comfortable and elegant. I remember the wardrobe mistress at the Today show handing me back my Brioni jacket after she’d pressed it, saying, “Bob, that blazer don’t owe you nothin’.”

Friday Five with Bob Vila

5. The Sea Growing up in Miami and Havana, the sea was always within sight. The two years I lived in Germany deprived me of that closeness. Since then, I’ve never lived too far from the shore.

Matt Leines

It's Nice That 27 Jan 2012, 3:00 pm CET

Main

I know we’ve posted him before but if Matt is prepared to make such great work at such an alarming rate then what are we to do? Every picture he creates (and god knows how he creates them) seems at once mythological but still futuristic, like that bit in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure when they bring Beethoven to the mall and he plays the keyboards. Matt’s images have got so much story behind them that I’m just waiting, praying, for the day he starts making comic books. (Read more)

Simon Høsberg

It's Nice That 27 Jan 2012, 2:00 pm CET

Lead2

Photographer Simon Høsberg is a man of many lives. Mountain climber. Dancer. Impromptu advice giver. Groupie. He even made it from Copenhagen to the Mediterranean on 14 euros. A browse through ihs website is like reading the biographies of ten men rolled into one – with camera in hand he’s captured a staggering number of faces and stories. But while being called a “jack of all trades” is often short and for a lack of focus, Høsberg’s capable endeavors are the product of an active mind and enthusiastic approach rather than an inability to specify. Long live variety! (Read more)

SCOTT GARNER

Fluxblog 27 Jan 2012, 1:13 pm CET

SCOTT GARNER

Still Life is an interactive gallery piece that takes traditional still life painting into the fourth dimension with a motion-sensitive frame on a rotating mount.

Years ago Scott had the idea of a still life painting that wasn’t so still, but could never quite wrap his head around how to build it. After various experiments and explorations, he settled on Unity 3D as the ideal tool to make it happen.
